In 1962, Frank Sinatra set out on a world tour to benefit handicapped, ill, and orphaned children. He had been planning to do a similar trip as far back as 1955. He said that, as an “overprivileged adult, I ought to help underprivileged children.” In less than two months he visited Tokyo, Hong Kong, Israel (Jerusalem and Nazareth, where he took part in groundbreaking ceremonies for the Frank Sinatra International Youth Center for Arab and Jewish Children), Athens, Italy (Rome and Milan), Monaco, London, and Paris. Sinatra, who paid the $300,000 for travel expenses for he and his band out of pocket, reportedly raised $1.2 million for children’s charities during the tour.
